The Tata Harrier has carved a niche for itself in the Indian SUV market, captivating buyers with its bold design, luxurious interiors, and feature-rich package. The 2023 facelift further solidified its position as a well-rounded contender in the segment. Now, Tata sets its sights on the electric future with the highly anticipated Harrier EV, expected to launch by the end of 2024.

Built for the Electric Age:

The Harrier EV ditches the traditional platform for the new ‘Acti.ev’ architecture, specifically designed for electric vehicles. This translates to several advantages:

  • Enhanced Interior Space: Passengers, especially in the second row, will enjoy the benefits of a flat floor, maximizing comfort on long journeys.
  • Extended Range: The ‘Acti.ev’ platform facilitates the integration of a larger battery pack, potentially offering a driving range of around 500 km on a single charge – a significant advantage in the growing EV market. Estimates suggest a battery pack capacity between 60kWh and 65kWh.

Thrilling AWD Capability:

Adventure enthusiasts will be excited to learn that the Harrier EV might embrace Tata’s true SUV legacy by offering All-Wheel Drive (AWD) capabilities. This would make the Harrier EV a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of electric efficiency and off-road prowess.

Design Language: Evolution, not Revolution

The Harrier EV concept unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo offered a glimpse of what to expect. The production version is likely to retain the essence of the Harrier’s design:

  • Signature Lighting: The familiar connected LED DRLs and vertical LED headlamps will continue to lend the SUV a distinctive presence.
  • Subtle Distinctions: Expect a redesigned front grille, possibly sporting a 2D Tata logo, to set the EV variant apart from its gasoline counterpart.
  • Aerodynamic Enhancements: New alloy wheels optimized for the EV platform might grace the sides, potentially contributing to improved range.
  • Minimal Rear Alterations: The rear design is expected to remain largely unchanged from the current Harrier.

Interior Refinements and Tech Focus:

While the basic interior layout might carry over from the existing Harrier, the EV variant could introduce a lighter color theme to create a more airy feel compared to the current all-black cabin. Feature-wise, expect the touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and touch-based climate controls to be retained.

The Harrier EV could elevate the in-car experience further by introducing:

  • EV-Specific Features: Keep an eye out for functionalities like V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) charging capabilities, expanding the SUV’s utility.
  • AWD-Specific Displays: The AWD variant might boast additional displays or controls to enhance the driving experience on challenging terrains.

Launch and Price Expectation:

The Tata Harrier EV is slated for a late-2024 launch, with a price range estimated between Rs. 25 lakh and Rs. 35 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). With its blend of impressive range, potential AWD capabilities, and a feature-rich interior, the Harrier EV is poised to be a frontrunner in the electric SUV segment. With minimal competition expected in its immediate price range, the Harrier EV has the potential to disrupt the market and establish itself as a leader in the electric SUV revolution.
