The Suzuki WagonR has been one of India’s most popular hatchbacks, loved for its fuel efficiency, reliability, and spacious interiors. Now, Suzuki is working on an all-new WagonR, which is expected to launch in Japan later this year. The big news? It could become the world’s first minicar with a full-hybrid system! 🚗⚡

New-Gen WagonR – Hybrid Powertrain & Features

Suzuki is set to introduce a strong hybrid setup for the next-gen WagonR, featuring a combination of:

  • 660cc, inline 3-cylinder DOHC petrol engine producing 54 PS & 58 Nm of torque.
  • Electric motor contributing 10 PS & 29 Nm, paired with an electric CVT transmission.
  • Hybrid technology similar to what Suzuki currently offers in Solio and AGS models.

This new hybrid system aims to boost fuel efficiency while keeping emissions low. Additionally, the next-gen WagonR will see some major upgrades: ✅ Sliding Rear Doors – Easier passenger entry and cargo loading.
Customizable Seats – Flexible seating arrangements for better comfort.
More Premium Interiors – Better materials and smart storage spaces.

In terms of size, the Japan-spec WagonR will be 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm and a weight of 850 kg. Pricing in Japan is expected to start at 1.3 million yen (₹7.65 lakh), with the top-end variant reaching 1.9 million yen (₹11.19 lakh).

Hybrid WagonR for India – Will It Come?

In India, Maruti Suzuki is also developing an affordable hybrid system for its small cars, including WagonR, Swift, Dzire, and Fronx. Unlike Toyota’s expensive hybrid tech, Maruti’s cost-effective hybrid solution is designed to keep prices competitive. The Indian WagonR hybrid may feature a 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol engine with an in-house developed hybrid system.

However, Maruti’s hybrid plans depend on government policies. Currently, the GST on EVs is just 5%, whereas strong hybrids attract 28% GST + additional cess (totaling around 43% tax). There are no nationwide subsidies for hybrids, though some states like Uttar Pradesh have introduced registration tax waivers for strong hybrids. More states need to follow this trend for hybrids to become a popular choice in India.

Will the Hybrid WagonR Be a Success?

If Maruti manages to keep costs low and government policies become more hybrid-friendly, the Hybrid WagonR could be a big hit in India! It could offer better mileage, lower emissions, and an eco-friendly alternative to petrol-only cars.

What do you think? Would you buy a Hybrid WagonR in India? Let us know in the comments!
