Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is revving up to enter the electric scooter race with the Activa EV. Here’s a quick look:

  • Honda’s First Electric Entry: Honda is set to launch its first electric two-wheeler in India, the Activa EV, in 2025.
  • Production Ramp Up: To meet demand, Honda added new production lines in Gujarat and Karnataka plants. The Karnataka facility will manufacture the Activa EV starting December 2024.
  • Expected Price and Competition: While official pricing is unknown, rumors suggest the Activa EV will cost around Rs. 1.10 lakh, competing with popular options like Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, and Ola S1 Pro. Details on range, battery size, and variants are still awaited.
  • Increased Production Capacity: The new production lines will significantly boost HMSI’s output. The Gujarat plant’s third line will add 6.6 lakh units annually, and a dedicated EV line is planned for FY25. This expansion aims to raise overall capacity by 9 lakh units.
  • Growth Target: HMSI is optimistic about the future, targeting a double-digit growth rate of over 15% for FY25, building on three consecutive years of growth. The company expects total output to reach around 5.75 million units in FY25, nearing its FY19 peak of 5.9 million units.
  • Scooter and Motorcycle Sales Growth: HMSI anticipates an 11% increase in scooter production for FY25, exceeding 3 million units. Motorcycle production is expected to grow 23%, reaching 2.65 million units.
  • FY24 Sales Performance: Last year, HMSI captured a 25% market share with domestic sales of 4.5 million units. Scooters saw a slight decline in market share to 43% due to new EV players. Motorcycles, however, saw a market share increase of 150 basis points with sales of about 2 million units, driven by the Shine 100 model.
